There are two types of reading: passive and active. What most people considered to be reading is passive reading. Why? Because it is easy. Or because active reading is harder (but higher reward).
Yes, I totally agree with you. When I read a book or read a paper, I will highlight the important things and somwhere I can not understand, write its logical structure and review them regularly. I also have an Ebbinghaus chart to remind me to review which I read and studied. I found that every time I review the book or paper, I can understand the new things or somewhere I could not understand before. That is exactly which motivates me the most to continue reading.
